ERA ACCELERATES TURNAROUND TIME FOR PROFICIENCY TESTING RESULTS
Environmental Resource Associates (ERA), a Waters® Business, recently completed a nine-month project to significantly reduce the turnaround time for reporting laboratory proficiency testing (PT) results. Beginning August 1, ERA’s innovative new process will allow customers to know within two business days of a study close if they pass or fail a proficiency test – nineteen days faster than before.
It is imperative that laboratories receive reliable PT results as quickly as possible. Laboratories rely on proficiency tests to signal potential quality issues within their facility. A failed proficiency test could be an indicator of a problem with testing methodology, instrument, or an analyst’s performance.
Dr. Carl Craig, President of ERA, who was a driving force behind the development of the new process explained, “A laboratory’s PT results drive key decisions in the areas of air and water quality, health care, environmental management, food safety, and laboratory operations. Having faster access to study results is absolutely critical because of the larger implications when testing drinking water, air pollutants or waste water.”
The two-day report turnaround is effective with ERA’s monthly proficiency testing studies that include water pollution, drinking water, air and emissions, and soil.
“Whether it’s a college student waiting for test scores or a patient waiting on a biopsy result, improvements in technology and data processing have allowed results to be returned quickly in many other areas.” Craig added, “I put the challenge out to the ERA team last year to reduce the report turnaround time and they delivered in a big way.”

SSAS IS HERE AND ERA IS READY
Beginning June 16, 2013, the manufacture and distribution of audit samples will transition to a private accredited source rather than the EPA; previously the EPA provided audit samples for emissions testing to state and local agencies. Obtaining audit samples will be the responsibility of the source owner or an authorized testing representative or firm.
ERA has been working on SSAS program and processes, the development of audit and quality control samples, and the development of internal data systems in anticipation of the program implementation; which is why ERA was named the first Accredited Audit Sample Provider (AASP) by EPA and TNI.
ERA is ready to get to work to help you meet the demands and requirements of the SSAS program. Our technical staff has been active in the development of this audit program from its inception. We're prepared to help you with your sampling needs as the program is implemented across the U.S., keeping you a step ahead on making sure facilities are compliant and representative testers and laboratories are prepared.

JEFFCO RECOGNIZES ERA
ERA was recently honored with a Business Recognition Award by Jefferson County Economic Development Corporation (JeffcoEDC). The Business Recognition award, handed out at the 19th Annual Industry Appreciation Awards breakfast on Thursday, March 22, 2012, was given to “companies showing growth in primary employment and/or capital investment”.
Carl Craig, ERA President, was on hand to receive the award. He commented, “We are pleased to have been recognized by Jefferson County. Having the support of the County Commissioners as well as their economic development team make it clear why we remain invested in Jefferson County, and we look forward to continued business growth here."

ERA MOVES TO NEW FACILITY
In December 2011, ERA moved into a brand new building in Golden, Colorado. Located in the Coors Tech Center, the new facility is more than double the size of ERA’s former space and includes 60% more lab space than the company’s Arvada facility, ERA’s home for 11 years.
ERA President, Carl Craig, and the company’s Director of Operations, David Kilhefner, a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt, worked with the building 's contractor on the design of the facility. Guided by the principles of lean manufacturing, the laboratory space—25,000 square feet of dedicated space—was designed to maximize value and reduce waste in the manufacturing of ERA’s PT and CRM products.
In addition, Kilhefner conducted intensive value stream mapping to ensure timely and optimal flow of materials and inventory control—from receipt of raw materials, to product manufacturing, to validation and verification of standards, to shipping of finished product.
For ERA, the new facility, particularly the much larger lab space, has alleviated many of the challenges that companies experience as they grow and expand—lack of space to operate with optimal efficiency.
Kilhefner said of the new facility, “Our new facility gives us the space to be even more deliberate and dedicated to quality. ERA understands that product quality can never be compromised and this belief and focus permeates the entire ERA organization.”
