Streamlined Reporting and Empowering New Tools to Help Quality Assurance Managers Monitor and Improve Laboratory Performance

GOLDEN, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 4, 2015-- Waters Corporation (NYSE:WAT) today announced that ERA®, A Waters® Business, introduced the new eDATA® 2.0 Proficiency Testing (PT) portal enabling environmental laboratories to manage their proficiency testing data more efficiently and gain greater insight into their laboratory’s performance. The portal features new statistical analysis, data visualization and reporting tools that give environmental lab managers the ability to track results over time, flag potential issues and take preventive steps before corrective action becomes necessary.

“The new PT dashboard makes it easier and faster to manage PT studies and offers quality assurance professionals more options for analyzing and interpreting data,” said Michael Yelle, Vice President Consumables Business Unit, Waters Division. “Moreover, eDATA allows us to better address the proficiency testing requirements of our international customers. ERA’s in-depth knowledge of major international accreditation and regulatory bodies enables us to expertly guide customers through the analytical challenges they face.”

In a newly-published webinar, ERA’s proficiency testing experts demonstrate the new features of eDATA 2.0 and the ease with which test results can be managed.

Environmental laboratories are required to conduct periodic proficiency tests to maintain their accreditation. Proficiency tests measure a laboratory’s ability to generate high-quality, credible results for their clients. Laboratory managers use proficiency test data to assess their lab’s state of compliance with industry standards and identify areas for improvement in terms of productivity and efficiency.

Environmental Resource Associates (ERA), a Waters® Business, recently completed a nine-month project to significantly reduce the turnaround time for reporting laboratory proficiency testing (PT) results. Beginning August 1, 2013, ERA’s innovative new process will allow customers to know within two business days of a study close if they pass or fail a proficiency test – nineteen days faster than before.

It is imperative that laboratories receive reliable PT results as quickly as possible. Laboratories rely on proficiency tests to signal potential quality issues within their facility. A failed proficiency test could be an indicator of a problem with testing methodology, instrument, or an analyst’s performance.

Dr. Carl Craig, President of ERA, who was a driving force behind the development of the new process explained, “A laboratory’s PT results drive key decisions in the areas of air and water quality, health care, environmental management, food safety, and laboratory operations. Having faster access to study results is absolutely critical because of the larger implications when testing drinking water, air pollutants or waste water.”

The two-day report turnaround is effective with ERA’s monthly proficiency testing studies that include water pollution, drinking water, air and emissions, and soil.

“Whether it’s a college student waiting for test scores or a patient waiting on a biopsy result, improvements in technology and data processing have allowed results to be returned quickly in many other areas.” Craig added, “I put the challenge out to the ERA team last year to reduce the report turnaround time and they delivered in a big way.”

Beginning June 16, 2013, the manufacture and distribution of audit samples will transition to a private accredited source rather than the EPA; previously the EPA provided audit samples for emissions testing to state and local agencies. Obtaining audit samples will be the responsibility of the source owner or an authorized testing representative or firm.

ERA has been working on SSAS program and processes, the development of audit and quality control samples, and the development of internal data systems in anticipation of the program implementation; which is why ERA was named the first Accredited Audit Sample Provider (AASP) by EPA and TNI.

ERA is ready to get to work to help you meet the demands and requirements of the SSAS program. Our technical staff has been active in the development of this audit program from its inception. We're prepared to help you with your sampling needs as the program is implemented across the U.S., keeping you a step ahead on making sure facilities are compliant and representative testers and laboratories are prepared.
